The next time I lifted the covers from my head, the sun was already setting. I peeked over at my phone to see the time. Five twenty p.m. Great, I thought. I’d managed to sleep the whole day away over a guy I’d only known for about two weeks. Looking at my phone a little longer, I also noticed several missed texts—from my Three Rs + a J WhatsApp message chain, my parents, and Olivia. I decided to check Liv’s first, thinking it was probably going to be the one with the least chance of making me throw my phone across the room. I was sure the girls wanted to know about last night with Zayn, since I’d foolishly texted them while we were at crazy golf to declare that I wanted him to spend the night. And my parents? Well, there was no telling what their texts said, but they had the best chance of saying something that would make me cringe and groan my way back under the covers.

Opening Olivia’s text chain, I almost immediately regretted my decision.

Hey babes. I know you’re probably out with that sexy singer of yours but hit me back and let me know if you’re free tonight, yeah.

I looked closely at her first text and noticed she had originally sent me the message around noon. Two hours later, she’d texted again.

Okay, but are you two tied up, eh? Or maybe you’re at one of your afternoon teas again?

Still with no response from me, she texted again another hour later.

Rob? You’re all right, eh? It’s not like you to go ghost.

Well, this was going to go well, I thought. It had been five hours since her first text and two since her last. There was no way I was getting out of responding without telling her about my latest dating misfortune. I sucked up my pride and responded back.

Hey, Liv, sorry babe. I’ve been in bed all day.

Olivia: What?! All day? What gives? Oh wait, like, in a good way?

No, definitely not in a good way.

Olivia: Oh damn, what’s wrong?

Well, Zayn broke up with me this morning.

Olivia: Not sexy singer?!

Yep. So, he can lose the fun nickname now, I suppose.

Every time Liv typed “sexy singer” in the past, I could literally hear it in her British accent, sounding more like seggzy singah. Normally, this sent me through the roof with laughter, but today it just felt cruel, and I needed her to stop. Thankfully, she took the cue.

Olivia: Did he say why, babe?

Honestly, Liv, it’s a long story.

Well, actually, I corrected myself, it’s a pretty short story.

The same short story as always for me. He just wasn’t that into me.

Olivia: Nooo, that can’t be true. I saw you two together. He was very into you, babe. Like, very.

Yeah, but that was before Samaya, his childhood friend, professed her love to him, by text, while we were in each other’s arms. I can’t exactly compete with that.

Olivia: Oh my God, Rob. WTF.

I know.

Olivia: Okay, you know what? You’re coming over tonight.
